Amalga Barrens

The Amalga Barrens is a salt playa wetlands habitat several square miles in area with little human activity. Expect to see marsh birds, birds of prey, and many shorebirds. This site is on private lands, please stay on the road to view wildlife.

American West Heritage Center

Discover what western life was like from 1820 to 1920 at this 160-acre living history center. Learn to spin wool, weave rugs, milk a cow or just enjoy the fresh mountain air and beautiful scenery on a wagon ride around the site. The center offers hands-on learning as you visit with Native Americans, mountain men and pioneers dressed in period costume. Visit the spacious welcome center featuring exhibits on local history, a spectacular view of the Wellsville Mountains and an outstanding gift shop featuring "Made in Utah" products. During the summer season of programming, wander through arts and crafts demonstrations, visit military encampments, Native American villages and mountain men rendezvous sites. Enjoy a Dutch oven dinner and tap your toe to western entertainmenet!

Cutler Marsh

Cutler Marsh was created by the shallow water of the Bear River at the head of the Cutler Reservoir. It is best viewed from the bridges where roads cross the marsh, and the boat docks (restroom here), or by canoe. Expect many waterfowl and shorebirds. A 2.5 mile loop trail starts and ends near Benson Marina (on 3000 North) and includes a foot bridge over the old railroad trestle to the south. Look for American Bittern, White-faced Ibis, Snowy Egret, Cattle Egret, Great Blue Heron, Northern Harrier, Common Yellowthroat, American White Pelican, and Sandhill Crane. Habitat includes freshwater marsh, open water, shoreline, wetland pasture and some riparian areas. Visit this site any season but winter.

There are various ways to access the marsh, but in general you can take US Hwy 30 west from Logan for about 2.5 miles. There is a boat launch on the south side of Hwy 30 or you can turn north on 3200 West or State Hwy 23 to access the marina and other viewing sites. GPS coordinates are for the Hwy 30 boat launch.

First Dam

This grassy park marks the first of three dams constucted to harness the power of Logan River for electricity.  On a sunny, spring day, the banks of First Dam come alive with picnickers, volleyball, sunbathers and college students.  Hopefully geese and ducks are always looking for a tasty crumb.  Local anglers also frequent the water's edge in hopes of landing one of the many trout stocked here each year.  Newly constructed vewing decks, fishing piers and restrooms make this park an enjoyable spot for everyone.

Hardware Ranch and Elk Refuge

Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area (WMA) was purchased by the State of Utah in 1945 as a location to operate a winter feeding program for Rocky Mountain Elk. Hardware Ranch WMA also provides habitat for many other species of wildlife, promotes wildlife research and management, and offers visitors recreational wildlife education. Through a cooperative effort with private contractors, Hardware Ranch offers opportunities during the winter season including horse-drawn sleigh rides to view the wintering elk, a gift shop and summer weekend wagon rides. Open for fishing during the summer with proper licenses.

Hawkwatch International Wellsville Mountains site

You can view many western hawk species as they fly over the Wellsville Mountains September through October. This site is located 3000 feet above the canyon bottom. Volunteer to assist the Hawkwatch International team when they are camped at the site in early fall. Be prepared for a 3 mile hike. Visit Bridgerland Audubon Society on the web for a schedule of Hawkwatch outings.  http://www.bridgerlandaudubon.org/. GPS coordinates are for beginning of trail.

High Creek Canyon

Birding is good all the way up High Creek to the trailhead at the roads end. Look for Winter Wren (June), American Dipper, Plumbeous Vireo, and Western Tanger. The scenery is also outstanding. Several trails depart from the trailhead and provide access the high mountain habitats within Mount Naomi Wilderness. Habitat consists of stream, riparian, mountain shrub, bigtooth maple, aspen, and conifer. Visit this site any season except winter.

Hyrum City Museum

This new Hyrum City museum is still under development in the beautiful new Hyrum City Library/Museum complex. The building was completed in May of 2007 and displays are currently being designed and constructed. Call for more information or to arrange a visit.

Hyrum State Park

This beautiful 450-acre manmade lake offers boating, year-round fishing, waterskiing, camping, and swimming. Facilities include a 32-unit campground with one ADA site, modern restrooms, showers, a concrete boat ramp, and a sandy beach. A group camping area is available by reservation for reunions and parties. The park is located only 15 minutes from downtown Logan. Blacksmith Fork Canyon and Hardware Ranch Elk Refuge are only 16 miles to the east.

Limber Pine Nature Trail

Trailheads: Limber Pine Nature Trail, Bear Lake summit on US 89 about 30.7 miles from Logan

Elevation Start/Middle/End:7800/7880/7800 feet

Length: 1.3 mile rouond trip

Features: A short walk with an elevation change of about 80 feet attained by a series of switchbacks through the fir and aspen forest and meadows with abundant wildflowers. The goal is a large limber pine, which are actually several trees grown together. It is quite a bit older than most other trees in the area. There are good views of Bear Lake from several points.

 

Trail information: There are a series of signs along the trail, giving much information on the flora and fauna. The hike around the trail wil take about an hour, however groups with small children should plan to take a little longer. The trail has been reconstructed to provide fewer steep sections and a smoother walking surface.

Logan Canyon Scenic Byway

Whether you travel by foot, bicycle or car, a journey along the Logan Canyon Scenic Byway offers enough wild natural beauty, diverse recreational opportunities and fascinating stories to satifsy even the most demanding adventurer.  Located approximately ninety miles north of Salt Lake City, this winding stretch of U.S. 89 runs from the city of Logan to the brilliant blue waters of Bear Lake.  It passes through vibrant fields of wildflowers, between vertical limestone cliffs and along picturesque streams brimming with native trout. The best way to truly experience its sites is to leave the road behind and immerse yourself in Logan Canyon's vibrant spirit.

Logan Ranger District and Visitor Center

Ranger districts typically manage recreation facilities and activities, handle special permits, and sponsor interpretive education programs. Stop by the Logan Ranger District and Visitor Center to load up on maps, get acquainted with recreation opportunities, check on current conditions, and learn more about how to keep the Forest healthy.

The Logan Ranger District has two Wilderness Areas, totaling more than 67,000 acres, within its boundary: Mount Naomi and Wellsville Mountains, and the Logan Canyon Scenic Byway (Highway 89.)

Logan Regional Family History Center

Find out about your family history at this fascinating center, which has computers that tie into the famous genealogy library located in Salt Lake City. Just type in your name, and find a long-lost relative! The Logan Regional Family History center is owned and operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) and is open to all people.

Martin Harris Pagaent

The town of Clarkston is home to an annual pageant chronicling the life of LDS Church leader Martin Harris, who helped finance the first printing of the Book of Mormon. Harris is buried in Clarkston, where he made his home during the last part of his life. According to the pageant website, "Now over 20 years old, the Martin Harris Pageant has grown from a little-known community play to an epic pageant attended annually by thousands of people." Muddy Road Outfitters and Canoe Rentals

Jim and Barbara Waterson are knowledgeable about the waterways of the Bear River and its tributaries in Cache Valley. They have been helping people with their canoe trips for eight years. There are fourteen canoes available for rent. There are also maps and "water blaster" squirt guns available to use on your canoeing adventure. Visit with the Watersons at their old barn and grassy picnic area and learn about local history and the Bear River waterways.

Museum of Anthropology, Utah State University

This teaching museum houses exhibits on the early inhabitants of the Great Basin and other regions of the world. Admission is free. Docent guidance or self-guided exploration.

Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art

The museum has one of the largest permanent collections in the Intermountain Region, featuring western and international artists, a fine ceramics collection, and Native American Artwork. Regularly changing exhibits bring a variety of fine arts and crafts to patrons.

Riverside Nature Trail

Riverside Nature Trail is one of the best birding spots in Logan Canyon. Look for Fox Sparrow, Orange-crowned Warbler, Hermit and Swainson's Thrush, Gray Catbird, Lazuli Bunting, Lincoln's Sparrow, Warbling Vireo, and Cordileran Flycatcher. Near Spring Hollow Campground is a small reservoir good for viewing Barrow's and Common Goldeneye during winter. Campground hosts at Spring Hollow often keep hummingbird feeders; look for Broad-tailed, Black-chinned, Calliope, and Rufous (August). Take a walk from Spring Hollow to Guinavah-Malibu Campground (a flat 1.5 miles), or from either campground head up the steep Crimson Trail, which leads into juniper woodlands and mountain shrub habitats. On the Crimson Trail look for Golden-crowned Kinglet, Rock Wren, and Canyon Wren. White-throated Swifts can be seen flying around near-by cliffs. A loop walk from Spring Hollow, along Crimson Trail to Guinavah-Malibu, then back along the Riverside Nature Trail will be 4 miles with some steep terrain. Visit this site any season except winter.

1) Spring Hollow Campgrouond has a small parking area at the entrance
2) Guinavah Campgrouond, near the amphitheater
Features: The Spring Hollow section of this trail is wide with interpretive signs and benches. The section before Guinavah narrows and includes a steeper climb.

Smithfield Livestock Auction

Every Thursday at 10 am, farmers, ranchers, and buyers converge on the livestock auction in Smithfield, where cattle, sheep, and other livestock are sold. News is exchanged as well as animals. If you want to get a real feel for the agricultural way of life, try visiting the auction, and stop into the café there for a burger and a soft drink.

Tony Grove Lake-Wasatch-Cache National Forest

Known as the crown jewel of the Bear River Range, this glacial lake greets visitors with an explosion of summer wildflowers and lush green plants. Tony Grove was formed by powerful and slow-moving glaciers, as evidenced by the huge boulders deposited around the lake. Moose are often spotted taking advantage of the water’s cool summer temperatures. There is a $3 parking fee for day use at the lake. Stay overnight in one of 34 campsites at the campground. Picnic areas and a fully accessible boardwalk are located near the water.
The turn-off to the lake is 19.6 miles up Logan Canyon off U.S. Hwy. 89. A 7-mile road climbs to 8,050 feet.

Utah State University Outdoor Recreation

Open to students as well as non-students. The outdoor rec center features equipment rental, trip information, library and some guided day trips. Some of the equipment that is available to rent includes canoes, kayaks, white water rafts, mountain bikes, back packs, tents, sleeping bags and other camping gear. For winter sports there are cross country and telemark skis (but no downhill skis), snowboards, snow shoes and some sleds. A ski trailor for pulling children is available, as well as some ski equipment sized for children. Check out the website or call for further information on equipment rental, scheduled day trips, a trip board, fall equipment swap and winter yurt rental information.
